Buying Pianos from Charity Shops

22/09/2013

Just a word of warning when considering buy piano from charity shops! I have two clients over the last couple of weeks that have spent a few hundred pounds each but when I went to tune the pianos they were in bad condition. Both had been in damp or in a room that had too much moisture present, this in time corroded metal parts inside the piano. In the short term moisture will ‘swell’ the woods and if left will rust and in the two cases in question left the actions sticking. This will mean a key will play once but be slow to return therefore repetition will be lost. Even from very early grades playing will be a struggle, in short impossible to progress with an instrument in this condition.  What seems ‘cheap’ is not always the case.
